Elizabeth

A classic cape was transformed into a lively cottage style home in this addition and renovation project. Where the original cape's windows were small, ceilings were low, spaces were cramped and the best ocean views were blocked by an earlier bathroom addition, the new cottage house has comfortable open spaces oriented to the views and a variety of dormers at the second floor level designed to maximize headroom while complying with shoreland zoning rules that severely limited the volume and height of second floor expansions.

The owner's interest in nature influenced design decisions throughout the house. The downstairs bathroom finishes were inspired by the ocean, sand and sea glass. Maine's woods and streams inspired finishes in the master bedroom and bath. The owner's passion for kayaking and canoeing is reflected in a "paddles and oars" railing detail at the master bedroom deck.
